Considerations

What Remains is a self-directed zine project compiled of essays written about my own life experiences. The visuals associated with the stories are an exercise in communicating complex emotions and messages in the absence of a clear written narrative.

These essays were written mostly as a stream of consciousness, and contain information that was never originally intended to be shared. Censorship protects the privacy of myself and others, but often removes identifying details of time, place, or person from the story.
While censoring these essays, a new narrative appeared in the text that remained. Without the context, readers are encouraged to “read between the lines”, regardless of whether or not their perception matches the reality of the event recounted in the original essay. The question What Remains asks the reader is: how do we perceive the past? How do we unload it all? And what remains when we’re done?
